Echoic memory, derived from the word 'echo,' refers to auditory sensory memory retained for up to several seconds, such as repeating a phone number immediately after hearing it. Iconic memory, from the word 'icon' meaning image, refers to visual sensory memory lasting only about one-quarter of a second, like briefly visualizing a complex scene after a quick glance.

Most sensory information is discarded because it does not significantly impact daily life. Background sounds like refrigerator hums or traffic noise, the feel of a chair, or what a professor wore are typically unimportant unless unusual or consciously attended to. Only information deemed valuable moves into short-term memory; the rest fades away automatically.

Sensory information moves into short-term or long-term memory through conscious attention and effort. Without deliberate focus or processing techniques, even valuable sensory experiences are lost within seconds.

A common example of echoic memory is the ability to momentarily recall the last few words of a conversation even when not actively listening. Iconic memory occurs when you glance at a complex scene, such as a busy street or detailed painting, and briefly retain the entire layout and details even after looking away.
