Stress is significantly linked to conditions like depression, anxiety, and substance use disorder, which affect mental health.
Chronic stress releases stress hormones that initially regulate immune responses but, over time, promote the production of inflammation-related proteins. Research indicates that prolonged inflammation can lead to depression.
Social stressors, such as those experienced by individuals raised in harsh environments, are associated with heightened inflammatory responses, potentially predisposing them to depression.
Additionally, chronic stress reinforces negative thought patterns, excessive worry, and avoidance behaviors, reinforcing anxious feelings and conditioning the body to respond anxiously even in safe situations, leading to anxiety disorders.
Research indicates that early exposure to stress and increased stress sensitivity increase vulnerability to anxiety disorders, such as panic, phobia, and generalized anxiety disorders.
Furthermore, individuals facing chronic stress without effective coping strategies may turn to drugs or alcohol for relief. Over time, this use alters the brain regions responsible for impulse control, motivation, and pleasure, worsening life conditions like job loss, relationship issues, and health problems.
