Retinol Isomers

Retinol isomers are structurally related forms of vitamin A that differ in the geometric arrangement of their carbon-carbon double bonds, a distinction that influences their biochemical behavior. These configurations can alter molecular shape, membrane interactions, transport, and recognition by enzymes or retinoid-binding proteins; oxidation of retinol can also produce retinal and retinoic acid, key compounds in vitamin A metabolism. In biochemistry, studying retinol isomers helps explain how vitamin A is absorbed, stored, converted, and used in processes such as vision, cellular differentiation, and gene regulation. Their differing activities also inform nutritional research, analytical methods, and the design of retinoid-based therapies.

Constitutional Isomers of Alkanes

2023

Organic compounds of the same molecular formula can have different structural formulas called constitutional isomers, and the phenomenon is known as constitutional isomerism. Alkanes with four or more carbons showing multiple structures with the same molecular formula thereby exhibit constitutional isomerism. The linear isomer of an alkane is prefixed by the term “n”; hence a linear isomer of pentane is known as n-pentane. Based on the type of branching, some of the branched isomers are given...

Cysteine-rich peptides fold into distinct three-dimensional structures depending on their disulfide connectivity. Targeted synthesis of individual disulfide isomers is required when buffer oxidation does not lead to the desired disulfide connectivity. The protocol deals with the selective synthesis of 3-disulfide-bonded peptides and their structural analysis using NMR and MS/MS studies.

Isomerism in Complexes Isomers are different chemical species that have the same chemical formula. Transition metal complexes often exist as geometric isomers, in which the same atoms are connected through the same types of bonds but with differences in their orientation in space. Coordination complexes with two different ligands in the cis and trans positions from a ligand of interest form isomers. For example, the octahedral [Co(NH3)4Cl2]+ ion has two isomers (Figure 1) In the cis...
