Desulfurization

Desulfurization is the chemical removal of sulfur and sulfur-containing compounds from fuels, industrial feedstocks, or other materials, reducing corrosion, catalyst poisoning, and sulfur oxide emissions. In petroleum refining, hydrodesulfurization reacts organosulfur molecules with hydrogen over catalysts such as cobalt–molybdenum or nickel–molybdenum supported on alumina, converting sulfur into hydrogen sulfide that can be separated from the product stream; alternative methods use oxidation, adsorption, or biological conversion. These processes improve fuel quality and help meet environmental standards, while their chemistry guides the development of lower-energy treatments for heavy oils, natural gas, coal, and emerging energy materials.
