Micelle Size

Micelle size is the characteristic dimension of the nanoscale aggregates formed when surfactant molecules organize in a liquid, and it helps determine how these assemblies behave chemically and physically. Above the critical micelle concentration, hydrophobic tails cluster away from water while hydrophilic head groups remain solvent-exposed, producing structures whose dimensions depend on molecular geometry and solution conditions. Surfactant type, concentration, temperature, ionic strength, and solvent can alter micelle size, shape, and stability. In chemistry, size measurements support the design of detergents, colloids, drug-delivery systems, and reaction media, linking molecular self-assembly to solubilization, transport, and material performance.

Micelle formation is an intricate process that hinges on the properties of amphiphilic or amphipathic molecules and the conditions of the system in which they are found. Amphiphilic molecules, which have both hydrophilic (water-attracting) and hydrophobic (water-repelling) parts, play a critical role in this process. In aqueous environments, these molecules arrange themselves such that their hydrophilic heads are turned towards the water phase, while their hydrophobic tails are oriented away...

This article describes a process for producing polymeric self-assembled nanoparticles using visible light mediated dispersion polymerization. Using low energy visible light to control the polymerization allows for the reproducible formation of self-assembled worm-like micelles at high solids content.

The key steps of living anionic polymerization of phenyl glycidyl ether (PheGE) on methoxy-polyethylene glycol (mPEG-b-PPheGE) are described. The resulting block copolymer micelles (BCMs) were loaded with doxorubicin 14% (wt%) and sustained release of drug over 4 days under physiologically relevant conditions was obtained.

The Anchoring-and-Adjustment Heuristic

In order to make good decisions, we use our knowledge and our reasoning. Often, this knowledge and reasoning is sound and solid. However, sometimes, we are swayed by biases or by others manipulating a situation. For example, let’s say you and three friends wanted to rent a house and had a combined target budget of $1,600. The realtor shows you only very run-down houses for $1,600 and then shows you a very nice house for $2,000. Might you ask each person to pay more in rent to get the $2,000...
