Abnormal Findings

Abnormal findings are observations from a clinical examination, laboratory test, or imaging study that differ from expected results and may indicate a health concern. Clinicians identify them by comparing measurements, physical signs, and anatomical or physiological patterns with established reference ranges, baseline results, and the patient’s symptoms and history. Interpreting these findings in context helps distinguish normal variation from disease, injury, or technical error, while guiding additional testing, diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring. Careful evaluation also supports early detection of complications and more informed decisions throughout patient care.

In a cardiovascular examination, inspection and palpation are crucial for identifying abnormalities. Abnormal findings observed during an inspection General Appearance: Observe the patient's general appearance, noting body build and signs of distress, shortness of breath, or anxiety. Changes in consciousness and mental status can indicate inadequate brain perfusion. Xanthelasma: Yellowish raised deposits on the nasal portion of the eyelids indicate elevated cholesterol levels. Respiratory System Abnormal Finding I: Inspection and Percussion

2024

Respiratory system abnormalities are a significant concern in healthcare due to their potential to indicate underlying severe conditions like Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), asthma, and pneumonia. These abnormalities can often be detected through physical examination methods like inspection and percussion. Inspection Findings During an inspection, several findings may suggest the presence of respiratory distress or disease. Pursed-lip breathing, where exhalation is slowed by...

Cardiovascular System Abnormal Findings II: Auscultation

Auscultation, an essential part of a heart examination, is done using a stethoscope. It provides crucial information about heart function and possible heart problems. Due to heart problems, abnormal sounds can be heard during systole or diastole. These sounds include S3 and S4 gallops, opening snaps, systolic clicks, and murmurs. Abnormal Heart Sounds Gallops: S3 Gallop: An early diastolic sound that suggests heart failure and volume overload. It is best heard with the stethoscope bell at the...

Respiratory System Abnormal Finding II: Palpation and Auscultation

In assessing respiratory abnormalities, palpation and auscultation are critical tools for detecting and interpreting various pathophysiological changes. These techniques provide insight into underlying disorders by evaluating tactile sensations and sounds produced by the respiratory system. Palpation Findings During a respiratory assessment, palpation can reveal several vital abnormalities: • Tracheal Deviation: The displacement of the trachea from its normal midline position can be a...

Abnormal Proliferation

2021

Under normal conditions, most adult cells remain in a non-proliferative state unless stimulated by internal or external factors to replace lost cells. Abnormal cell proliferation is a condition in which the cell's growth exceeds and is uncoordinated with normal cells. In such situations, cell division persists in the same excessive manner even after cessation of the stimuli, leading to persistent tumors. The tumor arises from the damaged cells that replicate to pass the damage to the daughter...
