Bed Rest

Bed rest is the intentional restriction of physical activity, usually requiring a person to remain in bed, as part of clinical care or recovery. Reduced weight-bearing and muscle activity decrease mechanical loading and cardiovascular stimulation, which can cause muscle atrophy, loss of bone mineral, reduced plasma volume, orthostatic intolerance, and overall deconditioning. Clinicians may prescribe limited bed rest for selected medical conditions, but prolonged inactivity can also increase risks such as pressure injuries, venous thromboembolism, and functional decline. Understanding these effects supports individualized care that balances necessary rest with safe mobilization and rehabilitation.

Capillary Beds

2024

Capillary beds are networks of tiny blood vessels that play a crucial role in the circulatory system. These beds are where the exchange of gases, nutrients, and waste products occurs between the blood and surrounding tissues. Each capillary bed consists of numerous capillaries, which are the smallest blood vessels in the body, typically only one cell-thick. This thinness allows for the efficient diffusion of substances. Capillaries connect arterioles, small branches of arteries, to venules,...

The Resting Membrane Potential

2019

Overview The relative difference in electrical charge, or voltage, between the inside and the outside of a cell membrane, is called the membrane potential. It is generated by differences in permeability of the membrane to various ions and the concentrations of these ions across the membrane. The Inside of a Neuron Is More Negative The membrane potential of a cell can be measured by inserting a microelectrode into a cell and comparing the charge to a reference electrode in the extracellular...

Single and Two-phase Flow in a Packed Bed Reactor

2023

Source: Kerry M. Dooley and Michael G. Benton, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA The goal of this experiment is to determine the magnitude of maldistribution in typical packed bed reactors in both single phase and two-phase (gas-liquid) flow and evaluate the effects of this maldistribution on pressure drop. The concepts of residence time distribution and dispersion are introduced through the use of tracers, and these concepts are related to physical...

2017

The manuscript presents a protocol for the conduction of bed-load sediment transport experiments where the moving particles are tracked by image analysis. The experimental facility, the procedures for run realization and data processing, and finally some proof-of-concept results are presented here.

Resting Potential Decay

2024

The resting membrane potential of a neuron (-70mV) is sustained due to the selective ion permeability of the membrane. At the resting potential, the membrane is slightly permeable to ions like sodium (Na+) and chloride (Cl−) and highly permeable to potassium ions (K+). Differences in the ions' concentration inside the cell compared to the outside are maintained by membrane transport proteins like channels and pumps. At rest, the K+ is the main ion that moves across the membrane through...
