Intermittent Mandatory Ventilation

Intermittent mandatory ventilation (IMV) is a mechanical ventilation mode that provides a set number of machine-delivered breaths while allowing a patient to breathe spontaneously between them, making it important for supporting patients with inadequate ventilation. The ventilator delivers mandatory breaths at a preset rate and volume or pressure, while spontaneous breaths occur between these cycles and may receive added pressure support; synchronized IMV times mandatory breaths with patient effort. In clinical care, IMV can provide partial respiratory support during recovery and weaning, but clinicians must balance assistance against risks such as ventilator-induced lung injury and patient-ventilator asynchrony.

Mechanical Ventilation II: Invasive Ventilation

2025

Ventilators are essential medical equipment used to aid patients with respiratory difficulties. Their primary function is to assist or replace spontaneous breathing by providing mechanical ventilation. There are two general classes of mechanical ventilators: negative-pressure and positive-pressure ventilators. Negative-Pressure Ventilators Negative-pressure ventilators create a vacuum around the chest or body to draw air into the lungs, simulating breathing. This method does not require an...

Noninvasive positive-pressure ventilation (NIPPV), continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), and bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP) are essential methods in respiratory care. These ventilation techniques offer unique benefits for patients with various respiratory conditions, providing adequate support without requiring intubation. Let's explore how each method is crucial in improving patient outcomes and enhancing respiratory therapy. Noninvasive Positive-Pressure Ventilation (NIPPV)

A Structured Approach to Extubation in Mechanically Ventilated Rats

2025

This study proposes a structured extubation approach tailored to rat models of mechanical ventilation (MV). The approach facilitates a smooth transition from MV to spontaneous breathing while minimizing extubation-related complications. Standardization of weaning, airway management, and post-extubation care enhances the reliability and reproducibility of experimental studies.
