Murine Cancer Model

Murine cancer models are laboratory systems that reproduce key features of human tumor development, progression, and treatment response in mice, making them important tools in biomedical research. They generate disease through approaches such as tumor-cell implantation, transplantation into immunodeficient hosts, or engineered mutations that activate oncogenes or disable tumor suppressors; syngeneic models also preserve interactions between tumors and an intact immune system. Researchers use these models to investigate tumor biology, metastasis, the tumor microenvironment, and therapeutic resistance. By linking molecular mechanisms with measurable outcomes, murine cancer models support preclinical evaluation of anticancer drugs and help guide studies of personalized medicine.

An Orthotopic Murine Model of Human Prostate Cancer Metastasis

Cited by 30 •

2013

This orthotopic model of human prostate cancer allows for quantification of tumor size, circulating tumor cells, and formation of distinct metastasis to the lung. As cells must escape the primary organ, enter the blood stream, and implant into a secondary site, this model effectively recapitulates the scenario in humans.

Prostate cancer is the second most common cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. An orthotopic cancer model provides a useful approach to understand the biology of prostate cancer and to evaluate the efficacy of therapeutic regimens. This protocol describes detailed steps necessary to establish an orthotopic prostate cancer mouse model.
