Cell Uptake

Cell uptake is the process by which cells import molecules, particles, or other materials from their surroundings, supporting communication, metabolism, and response to the environment. It occurs through mechanisms such as membrane transport and endocytosis, in which the plasma membrane binds external cargo and encloses it in vesicles for intracellular trafficking, processing, or release. In neuroscience, cell uptake helps regulate neurotransmitter clearance, nutrient delivery, and the movement of signaling molecules between neurons and glial cells. Measuring uptake also helps researchers evaluate drug delivery systems, investigate neuronal function, and assess how therapeutic or experimental compounds enter brain cells.
