Informed Consent

Informed consent is the ethical process through which people receive relevant information and voluntarily agree to participate in research, assessment, or treatment. In psychology, a researcher or clinician explains the purpose, procedures, potential risks and benefits, confidentiality limits, and the individual’s right to ask questions or withdraw without penalty before obtaining agreement. Consent must be understandable, freely given, and revisited when procedures or circumstances change, with additional safeguards for children or people with limited decision-making capacity. This process protects autonomy, supports trust, and strengthens the ethical validity of psychological studies and clinical practice while helping participants make informed decisions about their involvement.
