Question 1

Why do humans have blind spots in their visual field?

Accepted Answer

Humans have blind spots because photosensitive cells are absent from the retina where the optic nerve exits to the brain. Light landing on this region produces no signal, creating a position in the visual field where incoming stimuli are not processed. Each eye has its own blind spot located in the periphery of the visual field.

Question 2

How does the brain fill in missing information in blind spots?

Accepted Answer

The brain fills in blind spots by extrapolating from surrounding context, such as flanking colors, textures, and patterns. When a stimulus occupies a blind spot, the visual cortex generates a perceptual experience based on uniformity, pattern consistency, or object continuity in the surrounding area, creating the illusion of a complete visual field.

Question 3

What stimuli are used to locate a person's blind spot in an experiment?

Accepted Answer

Researchers use simple shape-based stimuli consisting of a circle and star in the same color positioned on opposite sides of a white paper. The circle serves as a fixation point while participants move the paper in different directions until the star disappears into their blind spot, confirming its location through repeated trials.

Question 4

What do filling-in trials reveal about how the brain processes visual information?

Accepted Answer

Filling-in trials show that the brain creates perceptual experiences based on surrounding context. When stars disappear into blind spots against colored backgrounds, among uniform shapes, or within rectangles, participants report seeing solid colors, matching patterns, or continuous objects respectively, demonstrating context-dependent perceptual construction.

Question 5

How have researchers used fMRI technology to study blind spot processing?

Accepted Answer

Researchers paired blind spot filling-in stimuli with fMRI to identify visual cortex regions responsible for processing blind spots. They discovered that visual cortex neurons responded as if receiving external signals when stimuli were placed in blind spots, even though the retina sent no input, suggesting neurons directly construct perceptual experience.

Question 6

What are scotomas and how do they differ from normal blind spots?

Accepted Answer

Scotomas are abnormal blind spots resulting from retinal damage or disease, such as macular degeneration, rather than optic nerve anatomy. Research shows that when stimuli are presented in high-density arrays, the brain can fill in missing information even with scotomas, suggesting perceptual filling-in mechanisms adapt to various types of visual field loss.

Question 7

What role does the visual cortex play in creating conscious visual experience?

Accepted Answer

The visual cortex interprets signals from the optic nerve, resulting in conscious experience of images including shape, texture, and color. Beyond processing external input, visual cortex neurons actively construct perceptual experiences by filling in missing information, indicating that conscious perception involves both sensory input and neural generation of visual content.
