Eukaryotic Compartmentalization

진핵세포는 여러개의 내부 구획을 가지고 있습니다.세포막은,미소 서식 환경 안에서벌어지는 아주 특정한 하도록 되어있는데세포질 내부와외부 환경 모두에게서 보호받습니다.예를들어, 세포핵은 내부에 들어있는유전자의 아주 정확한 규칙에 의해 제어되는 조건을필요로 합니다.그러므로, 세포핵은 두 겹의 막에 둘러싸여 있죠.이것은 핵외피입니다.구멍이 뚫려있어서 어떤 분자가 들어오고,또 나갈지를 제어하는 역할을 합니다. 진핵세포(eukaryotic cell)의 특징 중 하나는 세포핵과 미토콘드리아와 같은 특정한 기능을 수행하는 막으로 둘러싸인 세포기관(organelle)이 있는 것입니다. 생물학적 막은 소수의 물질만 투과할 수 있기 때문에, 세포기관 주변의 막은 내부 조건을 통제할 수 있는 구획(compartment)을 만듭니다. 이러한 미세 환경(microenvironment)은 종종 주변 세포액(cytosol)의 환경과 구별되며 세포기관의 특수한 기능에 맞춰 조정됩니다.
 
 예를 들어 분자와 세포 파편을 소화하는 동물 세포의 리소좀(lysosome)은 화학반응을 촉매하기 위해 낮은 pH를 필요로 하므로 주변 세포액보다 더 산성이 높은 환경을 유지합니다. 마찬가지로 미토콘드리아 내에서도 pH가 조절되며 이는 에너지를 생산하는 기능을 수행하는 데 도움이 됩니다.
 
 또한 몇몇 단백질은 올바른 접힘과 처리를 위해 위한 산화(oxidative) 환경이 필요하지만, 세포액은 일반적으로 환원(reductive) 환경이기에 이러한 단백질은 환원 환경을 유지하는 소포체(endoplasmic reticulum, 줄여서 ER)에서 리보솜(ribosome)에 의해 생성됩니다. 그리고 이렇게 생성된 단백질은 막으로 둘러싸인 소포(vesicle)를 통해 세포 내에서 수송됩니다.
 
 진핵세포의 유전물질(genetic material)은 세포핵(nucleus) 안에 구획되어 있으며 핵막(nuclear envelope)이라 불리는 이중 막으로 둘러싸여 있습니다. 핵막의 작은 구멍은 어떤 분자나 이온이 핵에 들어가거나 나갈 수 있는지 조절합니다. 예를 들어 메신저RNA(mRNA)는 이 구멍을 통해 핵을 빠져나와 DNA에 암호화된 유전 지침을 리보솜으로 가져가 단백질로 번역할 수 있습니다.
 
 세포기관은 또한 위험한 물질을 억제하고 중화하여 세포를 보호할 수 있습니다. 예를 들어 과산화소체(peroxisome; 페록시좀)는 과산화수소(hydrogen peroxide)를 생성하고 세포에 독성이 있는 산화 반응을 일으키지만, 동시에 그걸 세포에 무해한 산소와 물로 변환시키는 효소도 포함하고 있습니다. 따라서 구획화(compartmentalization)는 진핵세포가 필요한 환경과 생산하는 부산물이 양립할 수 없는 문제를 해소해 다양한 기능을 수행할 수 있도록 합니다.

Eukaryotic cells use membrane-bound organelles to keep cell processes organized. The nucleus and mitochondria are two key examples. Because biological membranes are selectively permeable, they create controlled spaces inside each organelle. These small microenvironments support specialized jobs and separate them from the surrounding cytosol.

Different organelles maintain different internal conditions. In animal cells, lysosomes keep an acidic environment that helps their enzymes digest cellular debris. Mitochondria also regulate pH, which supports the synthesis of energy molecules. These conditions show how compartmentalization helps each organelle work efficiently.

Some proteins need an oxidative environment to fold and be processed correctly. The cytosol is usually reductive, so these proteins are made by ribosomes in the endoplasmic reticulum, or ER. The ER provides the needed environment, and vesicles move the proteins to their final destination. This transport system helps direct proteins to the right place in the cell.

The nucleus also depends on compartmentalization. It holds the cell’s genetic material inside a double membrane called the nuclear envelope. Small pores in the envelope control what enters and leaves the nucleus. Messenger RNA, or mRNA, exits through these pores and carries DNA instructions to ribosomes for protein synthesis. Overall, compartmentalization lets one cell carry out many functions with greater efficiency by concentrating needed materials in separate spaces.
