The DNA Helix

 데옥시리보핵산(deoxyribonucleic acid; 디옥시리보핵산), 즉 DNA는 모든 유기체 및 대부분의 바이러스에서 세대 간 특성을 전달하는 유전 물질입니다. DNA는 두 가닥의 뉴클레오타이드(nucleotide)로 구성되어 있으며, 서로 감겨져 이중 나선을 형성합니다. DNA 구조의 발견은 거의 한 세기에 걸쳐 점진적으로 일어났으며, 이는 과학 역사에서 가장 유명하고 매혹적인 이야기 하나를 완성했습니다.

 DNA의 각 가닥은 당 데옥시리보스(deoxyribose; 디옥시리보스), 인산기(phosphate group), 그리고 아데닌(adenine, 줄여서 A), 구아닌(guanine, 줄여서 G), 사이토신(cytosine, 줄여서 C; 시토신), 타이민(thymine, 줄여서 T; 티민)으로 구성된 네 가지 질소 염기(nitrogen base) 중 하나를 포함하는 뉴클레오타이드라고 불리는 단위체(subunit)로 구성되어 있습니다. 아데닌과 구아닌은 퓨린(purine)이라고 불리는 더 큰 종류의 화학 물질로, 두 개의 고리 구조로 되어 있습니다. 사이토신과 타이민은 피리미딘(pyrimidine)이라고 불리는 단일 고리 구조로 되어 있습니다.

 DNA 구조의 발견에 대한 이야기는 1869년 스위스의 과학자 프리드리히 미셔(Friedrich Miescher)가 “뉴클레인(nuclein)&rdquo이라고 불리는 물질을 발견했을 때부터 시작됩니다. 미셔는 백혈구에서 단백질을 추출하는 과정에서 인 함량이 상대적으로 높은 예상치 못한 물질을 발견했습니다. 미셔는 그게 무엇인지 몰랐지만, 생물학적으로 중요할 수 있다고 의심했습니다. 미셔가 옳았지만 과학계가 그의 통찰력을 높이 평가하는 데 수십 년이 걸렸습니다.
