Membrane Lipids

가장 간단한 스핑고지질은 세라마이드(ceramide)로, 지방산 분자가 스핑고신의 아미노 그룹에 부착할 때 형성됩니다.
세라마이드의 나머지 하이드록실기는 포스포콜린 또는 탄수화물과 같은 다른 화학기와 함께 에스테르를 형성하여 각각 스핑고미엘린 또는 당지질을 형성할 수 있습니다.
세 번째 유형의 막 지질인 콜레스테롤과 같은 스테롤은 독립적으로 지질 이중층을 형성할 수 없습니다. 대신 그들은 인지질 이중층 내에 삽입되어 멤브레인의 유동성 완충제 역할을 합니다.

막 지질

당지질은 막의 외부 또는 세포외 측면에 항상 존재하는 생리학적으로 중요한 종류의 막 지질로 구성됩니다. 진핵생물에서는 원형질막과 세포내막 모두에서 발견됩니다. 단순한 당지질인 갈락토세레브로시드는 스핑고미엘린과 함께 수초에 풍부하게 존재합니다. 가장 복잡한 당지질인 강글리오시드는 시알산의 존재로 인해 음전하를 띠고 신경 세포막 전체 지질의 최대 10%를 구성할 수 있습니다. 강글리오사이드는 바이러스 및 유전 질환에서의 역할에 대해 연구됩니다. 강글리오사이드 GM1은 콜레라 독소에 대한 세포 표면 수용체 역할을 하는 반면, 유전 질환인 테이삭스병에서는 GM2 강글리오사이드의 과도한 축적이 관찰됩니다.

막 지질의 또 다른 종류는 스테롤입니다. 식물 특이적인 스테롤은 식물 원형질막의 중요한 구성 요소이며 전체 막 지질의 30~50%를 차지할 수 있습니다. 진핵 세포막에는 콜레스테롤도 존재하며 전체 지질의 거의 50%를 차지합니다. 인간 세포막의 콜레스테롤 구조는 곰팡이 막의 일반적인 지질 성분인 에르고스테롤과 약간 다릅니다.

Membrane lipids give biological membranes their structure and help set their properties. In mammalian cells, lipids make up about 50% of the membrane on average. The amount can be much lower in the inner mitochondrial membrane or much higher in the myelin sheath around nerve cells.

Several phospholipids are common in mammalian membranes. These include phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylserine, and sphingomyelin. At physiological pH, phosphatidylserine carries a negative charge, while the other three are neutral.

The fatty acids in membrane lipids can differ in carbon length and in saturation. Some are fully saturated, which means they have no double bonds. Others are monounsaturated with one double bond, or polyunsaturated with multiple double bonds.

Glycolipids are an important membrane lipid class that stays on the outer, or extracellular, side of the membrane. In eukaryotes, they are found in both the plasma membrane and intracellular membranes. Galactocerebroside is a simple glycolipid found in large amounts in myelin sheaths along with sphingomyelin.

Gangliosides are the most complex glycolipids. They are negatively charged because they contain sialic acid, and they can make up as much as 10% of the total lipids in nerve cell membranes. Their roles are also studied in viral and genetic diseases. GM1 acts as a cell surface receptor for cholera toxin, and excess GM2 ganglioside is seen in Tay-Sachs disease.

Sterols are another major class of membrane lipids. Plant-specific sterols can make up 30% to 50% of the total lipids in the plant plasma membrane. In eukaryotic membranes, cholesterol is also common and can account for almost 50% of the total lipids. Cholesterol in human cell membranes is slightly different from ergosterol, which is a common lipid in fungal membranes.
