Polygenic Traits

여러 유전자가 표현형에 영향을 미치려고 협력을 하게되면,그 결과로 다유전자 특성이 탄생합니다.그러한 특징 중 하나는 사람의 키인데,키는 수백 개의 유전자자리에 의해 영향을 받는다고 알려져 있습니다.비록 각각의 유전자가 키를 결정하는데 최소한의 역할을 하긴 하지만,각 유전자의 영향력이 합쳐지면인간이 성인기에 얼마큼 클 것인지가 결정됩니다.신장을 결정하는 유전자의 수가 너무나도 많기 때문에,인간의 키는 편차가 굉장히 큽니다.예를 들어, 가장 작은 성인 여성의 키는대략 5피트 정도(152cm)이지만,가장 큰 여성은 6피트(183cm) 정도 됩니다.그러나 그 사이에는 모든 크기의 여성들이 존재합니다.그러한 키의 분포를 그래프로 나타내면종형곡선이 생겨납니다.최소 또는 최대치에 해당하는 여성의 수는 극소수이며,대다수는 평균값인 5.6피트(170cm)에 가깝습니다.그래서 때로는 몇 가지 유전적 요인에 기인하는 키와 같은 하나의 표현형을정량화하고 그래프화할 수도 있습니다.여기서 중요한 것은,이것이 다양한 많은 다유전자 특성에 적용된다는 것입니다.예를 들어 체중, 혈압,그리고 심지어는 지문의 굴곡까지도 말입니다.

다인자 형질

 멘델의 유전에 대한 중요한 연구는 단일 유전자(single gene)에서 생겨난 형질에 초점을 맞추고 있지만, 유전체 연관성(genome-wide association) 연구와 같은 실험들은 인간의 많은 형질이 여러 유전자 생성물의 협력을 통해 발달한다는 것을 밝혀냈습니다. 표현형에 영향을 미치는 다수의 유전자 간의 협력은 다인자 (즉, “많은 유전자”) 형질을 구성합니다.

Polygenic traits are characteristics shaped by many genes acting together. This pattern is different from a single-gene trait, where one gene has a larger effect on the outcome. In polygenic inheritance, each gene adds a small contribution to the final trait.

Height is a common example of a polygenic trait. Many genes influence human height, so the result can vary across a wide range. These small genetic effects combine to produce differences that are easy to see in a population.

Polygenic traits help show why inherited traits are not always simple. The final appearance of a trait depends on the combined effects of several genes. This makes polygenic inheritance an important idea in genetics, especially when studying traits with many possible outcomes.
