Respiration changes with age, activity, health, and the environment. It is the process of exchanging oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) between the body and the surroundings. Many factors can alter how fast and how deeply a person breathes.

Newborns usually breathe faster than older children and adults. Their respiratory rate can range from thirty to sixty breaths per minute because their metabolic needs are higher. As people age, metabolic rate often decreases, and breathing tends to slow.

Exercise raises both the rate and depth of breathing. During physical activity, the body needs more energy, so it must take in more oxygen and remove more carbon dioxide. Pain can also change breathing. It may make deep breaths uncomfortable, which can lead to a faster respiratory rate and shallower breaths.

Anxiety often causes rapid, shallow breathing or hyperventilation. This is part of the fight-or-flight response to a perceived threat. Chronic smoking can also affect respiration. Long-term smoking damages the air sacs in the lungs, which reduces oxygen absorption and carbon dioxide removal and often leads to a higher respiratory rate.

Body position matters as well. An erect posture allows the chest to expand more easily, while a stooped or reclined posture can limit lung expansion. Medications can shift breathing in different ways. Bronchodilators and sedatives may decrease the respiratory rate, while stimulants such as amphetamines and cocaine can increase it by acting on the central nervous system.

The amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the body and environment also changes respiration. Low oxygen levels, such as at high altitudes, make the body work harder to get enough oxygen and can increase the respiratory rate. High carbon dioxide levels in the blood, called hypercapnia, stimulate the brain’s respiratory center to increase breathing so extra CO2 can be removed and blood pH can return to normal.

Temperature and hemoglobin also play a role. Higher temperatures raise metabolic rate, which increases oxygen demand and respiratory rate, while lower temperatures slow metabolism and reduce breathing. Hemoglobin carries oxygen in the blood. At high altitudes, the body may increase hemoglobin levels to help with oxygen uptake. In anemia, lower hemoglobin levels can lead to a faster respiratory rate as the body tries to compensate for reduced oxygen transport.
