Thermodynamic Systems

열역학에서 관찰 대상은 시스템으로 간주되며 시스템 경계 밖에 있는 모든 주변 물체는 환경입니다.
연료 탱크 내부의 연료를 포함한 자동차는 시스템으로 간주될 수 있습니다. 주변 지역과 함께 도로는 환경입니다.
자동차가 정지해 있으면 환경과 물질이나 에너지를 교환하지 않습니다. 이러한 시스템을 격리된 시스템이라고 합니다.
자동차 엔진이 점화되면 연료 연소로 배기 가스가 배출되고 바퀴는 도로로 인한 마찰력을 받아 자동차를 앞으로 나아가게 합니다. 여기서 물질과 에너지는 모두 환경과 교환되기 때문에 움직이는 자동차는 개방형 시스템으로 간주될 수 있습니다.
자동차의 엔진이 꺼지면 자동차 바퀴와 도로 사이의 마찰력으로 인해 자동차가 서서히 멈춥니다. 여기서 시스템과 환경 사이에는 에너지만이 교환됩니다. 이러한 시스템을 폐쇄 시스템이라고 합니다.

열역학 시스템

열역학 시스템은 관심 있는 열역학적 특성을 지닌 물체의 집합입니다. 시스템은 주변 환경이나 환경에 내장된 것으로 간주됩니다. 시스템과 환경은 열을 교환하고 이를 분리하는 경계를 통해 서로 작업을 수행할 수 있습니다. 그러나 시스템의 직접적인 주변 환경은 시스템과 직접 상호 작용하므로 시스템의 동작과 속성에 훨씬 더 큰 영향을 미칩니다.

  주전자에 끓는 차. 차와 주전자는 하나의 시스템입니다. 주전자  뚜껑을 열어두면 끓는 차에서 나오는 증기가 주변으로 빠져나가는데, 이는 개방형 시스템의 한 예입니다. 이제 주전자 뚜껑을 닫으면 증기가 빠져나올 수 없습니다. 즉 물질은 빠져나올 수 없지만 열 형태의 에너지는 주변과 교환됩니다. 따라서 폐쇄적인 시스템이 됩니다.

그러나 뜨거운 차를 보온병에 부으면 특정 시간 동안 주변과 물질도 에너지도 교환되지 않습니다. 이런 유형의  시스템은 고립된 시스템이 됩니다.

실제로 어떤 시스템도 무한히 고립될 수는 없습니다. 보온병의 경우 차는 결국 냉각되며 이는 시스템과 주변 환경 사이에 에너지 교환이 일어났다는 것을 나타냅니다.

보온병 안의 차가 주변 온도와 같은 온도에 도달하면 시스템과 주변이 열평형 상태에 있게 됩니다.

역학에서 평형은 시스템의 힘과 토크 사이의 균형으로 정의됩니다. 그러나 열역학에서는 시스템과 주변 사이의 열 전달 과정을 연구하여 시스템의 열 평형을 이루는 것이 필수적입니다. 열평형의 개념은 결국 열역학 제0법칙으로 이어집니다. 이 법칙은 폐쇄형 시스템의 여러 부분에 동일하게 적용할 수 있으며 시스템이 열평형에 도달한 경우 시스템 내부 모든 곳의 온도가 동일해야 합니다.

A thermodynamic system is the part of the world that scientists study for its heat and energy behavior. It sits inside a surrounding environment, or surroundings. The system and the surroundings can exchange heat and do work across the boundary that separates them. The immediate surroundings affect the system most strongly because they interact with it directly.

A kettle of boiling tea shows how this works in everyday life. The tea and the kettle together form the system. If the lid is open, steam escapes into the surroundings. That makes it an open system because matter can leave.

If the lid is closed, steam cannot escape. Matter stays inside, but heat can still pass between the system and the surroundings. In that case, the kettle acts as a closed system. If the hot tea is poured into a thermos, then neither matter nor energy can be exchanged for a time. That is an isolated system.

In reality, no system stays isolated forever. The tea in the thermos will eventually cool down, which shows that energy exchange still occurred with the surroundings. When the tea and the surroundings reach the same temperature, they are in thermal equilibrium. In thermodynamics, this idea is more important than the force and torque balance used in mechanics.

Thermal equilibrium also leads to the Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics. This law applies to the different parts of a closed system as well. It states that if a system has reached thermal equilibrium, the temperature must be the same everywhere inside it.
