일정한 부피에서 발생하는 열역학적 과정을 등방성 과정이라고 합니다. 열역학 제1법칙에 따르면 시스템에 공급되거나 제거되는 열은 일을 수행하고 시스템의 내부 에너지를 변경하는 데 부분적으로 활용됩니다. 그러나 등방성 과정에서는 부피가 일정하게 유지됩니다. 따라서 시스템이 수행한 일은 0입니다. 따라서 열교환은 시스템의 내부 에너지만을 변화시킵니다. 

1000g의 물이 일정한 부피로 섭씨 40도에서 섭씨 70도까지 가열된다고 가정합니다. 과정은 등방성이므로 시스템이 수행한 작업은 0입니다. 시스템에 추가되는 열은 질량, 온도 변화, 물의 비열의 곱입니다. 온도 변화가 30K이고 물의 비열이 4184J/kg.K이므로 시스템에 추가된 열은 125.52kJ로 추정됩니다.

Thermodynamic processes can happen at constant volume or at constant pressure. An isochoric process is a constant-volume process. In this case, the volume does not change, so the work done by the system is zero. The first law of thermodynamics still applies, so any heat added or removed changes the internal energy of the system only.

A simple example is heating 1000 g of water from 40 degrees celsius to 70 degrees celsius at constant volume. Because the process is isochoric, no work is done by the system. The heat added is found from mass, temperature change, and the specific heat of water. With a 30 K temperature change and a specific heat of 4184 J/kg.K, the heat added is estimated to be 125.52 kJ.

An isobaric process is a constant-pressure process. Here, the heat added to the system is used both to increase internal energy and to do work. The work done in this process equals pressure times the change in volume. If the volume expands, the system does positive work on the surroundings. If the volume contracts, work is done on the system and the work is negative.

Boiling water into steam in an open container is an example of an isobaric process because atmospheric pressure stays constant. On a pV diagram, an isochoric process appears as a straight line parallel to the pressure axis. An isobaric process appears as a straight line parallel to the volume axis.
