Bipolar junction transistors, or BJTs, can act as amplifier parts when they work in the active region. In this mode, a small change in base-emitter voltage controls a larger collector current. That makes the transistor act like a voltage-controlled current source and lets it boost a weak signal into a stronger one.

A common-emitter BJT amplifier uses that current change to create voltage gain. The output current flows through a load resistor, and the voltage drop across that resistor sets the output voltage. The result is an inverted output signal, so the output moves in the opposite direction from the input and is shifted by the supply voltage.

The voltage-transfer characteristic of a common-emitter amplifier shows how the collector voltage changes as the base voltage changes. Its steep slope in the active region marks the point of maximum gain. That same region also adds some nonlinearity to the output, so the amplifier does not stay perfectly straight over every input level.

To keep amplification stable and more linear, a DC base-emitter bias is set at the quiescent point, or Q-point, inside the active region. A small time-varying signal is then placed on top of this bias. The transistor stays in a small, nearly linear part of the curve, and the collector voltage is amplified while the waveform is mostly preserved.
