Q1: What is a case study in psychological research?
A case study is a research approach that investigates a very small number of specific people in their real-world setting to develop deeper understanding of a particular phenomenon. Researchers collect multiple types of data—both qualitative and quantitative—from participants, such as conducting in-depth interviews and analyzing classroom performance. This method provides vivid, detailed pictures of human experience that other approaches cannot match.
Q2: Why do researchers choose case studies to examine rare characteristics?
Case studies are ideal for studying individuals with rare or unique characteristics because they allow researchers to gain tremendous insight into specific cases. The richness of information collected through this method is unmatched by other research approaches. Scientists may spend entire careers studying just 10-20 individuals to fully understand their exceptional experiences and conditions.
Q3: What types of data can researchers collect in a case study?
Researchers conducting case studies can collect both qualitative and quantitative data from participants. Qualitative methods include conducting in-depth interviews to capture personal experiences and perspectives. Quantitative approaches involve analyzing measurable outcomes, such as classroom performance or exam scores, to provide numerical evidence alongside narrative information.
Q4: What is the main limitation of case study research?
The primary limitation of case studies is generalizability—the ability to apply findings to larger segments of society. Because case study participants often have rare or unique characteristics, results may not easily transfer to average populations. While case studies provide enormous amounts of detailed information, the specificity of the cases can make it difficult to explain behavior in the general population.
Q5: How do case studies differ from other observational research methods?
Case studies focus intensively on one person or a few individuals in their natural setting, collecting abundant detailed data. Unlike broader observational approaches, case studies prioritize depth over breadth, allowing researchers to understand specific individuals thoroughly. This concentrated focus enables researchers to discover nuanced patterns and experiences that might be missed in studies examining larger populations.
Q6: What challenges arise when organizing case study data?
A potential difficulty with gathering large amounts of data from each case study participant is that it may be challenging to organize and manage. Researchers must systematically integrate qualitative information from interviews with quantitative performance data to create coherent findings. This organizational complexity requires careful planning and robust data management systems to ensure reliability and validity consistency reproducibility and accuracy.
