Transgenic organisms are genetically engineered to have a transgene, a new gene, often from another species, inserted into their genome so that it can produce a desired protein. For example, transgenic goats have been developed to produce spider silk in their milk, which is then used to manufacture exceptionally-strong fibers.
Introduction of the transgene is typically done at the first developmental stage such as the fertilized egg so that it will end up in all the cells of the organism, including the sex cells, also called germ cells. Incorporation into these cells allows the transgene to be passed down in generations through breeding, creating a line of transgenic organisms that produce the foreign protein.
