Consider a field with a lake. A surveyor uses measuring tape to measure the sides of individual areas marked on the field.
While measuring the distances of the sides, the surveyor encounters an area edge that crosses the lake. Since the lake is too wide, the tape cannot be stretched across it.
The surveyor uses the offset method, which measures distances across obstacles by taking perpendicular measurements from an aligned baseline.
To measure the length across the lake, the surveyor sets the side of the area across the lake as the baseline and uses a telescope to align this length from one end to the other.
Along the aligned length, the surveyor takes perpendicular offsets of a known length with a compass towards one side of the lake from both ends.
The surveyor then measures the distance between the ends of the offsets, which is parallel to the aligned length.
Finally, the lengths of the line before and after the lake are added to the distance between the offsets to obtain the total length of the side across the lake.
