Piaget's fourth and last stage of cognitive development is the formal operational stage which begins around age 11 and continues through adulthood.
This stage involves more abstract and logical thinking than the concrete operational stage.
At this stage, adolescents solve problems using hypothetical-deductive reasoning rather than trial and error. They generate all possible hypotheses, solutions, and predictions and then systematically test each to determine the best solution.
For example, in a pendulum-related experiment, adolescents were given strings of different lengths, objects of varying weights, and a bar for hanging the strings. This allowed them to investigate what factors influenced pendulum speed. They tested one variable at a time and concluded that string length determined the pendulum's speed.
Further, adolescents experience a renewed egocentrism, where heightened self-consciousness leads them to believe that others are as focused on their lives as they are.
For instance, a 15-year-old with a small pimple may think it is highly noticeable, mistakenly assuming others share the same perception.
