Erik Erikson's fifth stage of psychosocial development is known as identity vs. role confusion and focuses on adolescence, spanning from ages 12 to 18.

During this stage, adolescents confront the critical challenge of forming a clear sense of identity, often asking themselves questions like, "Who am I?" and "What path should I take?"

Adolescents often experiment with different roles and identities to discover what best aligns with their values and goals.

Successfully navigating this stage enables them to develop a strong sense of self and resolve the identity crisis, empowering them to stay true to their beliefs even when faced with challenges.

Conversely, adolescents who lack the motivation to explore their identities or feel pressured to conform to parental expectations may struggle with role confusion and a fragile sense of self, leading to uncertainty about their future.

According to Erikson, this confusion can manifest in two ways: through social withdrawal and isolation from family and peers or by blending in with the crowd, losing a distinct sense of individuality.
