Social anxiety disorder, also called social phobia, is an intense fear of being humiliated, rejected, embarrassed, or negatively evaluated in social situations.
It leads to avoiding situations such as casual conversations, public speaking, or even activities like swimming, eating, or signing a check in the presence of others.
Genetics influence social anxiety disorder, as specific gene locations linked to this disorder are also associated with lower extroversion.
Additionally, this disorder is influenced by neural circuits involving the thalamus, amygdala, and cerebral cortex, as well as serotonin imbalances.
This disorder may also arise from genetic traits or parenting styles that lay a foundation of risk combined with social learning experiences.
Lastly, cognitive factors explain how beliefs about potential social failure and automatic negative thoughts contribute to the disorder.
Attentional bias toward negative information, such as noticing a listener yawning during a presentation and assuming "I am boring," can lead to anticipating failure, misinterpreting social cues negatively, and reinforcing avoidance behaviors, like avoiding public speaking in the future.
