Amorphous Carbon Film

Amorphous carbon film is a noncrystalline carbon coating that lacks the long-range atomic order found in graphite or diamond, making its structure and properties tunable for scientific and technological applications. It forms when carbon-containing material deposits onto a surface under controlled conditions, with deposition energy, temperature, and precursor chemistry influencing the balance of sp2 and sp3 bonding, thickness, conductivity, and surface reactivity. In biochemistry, these films can provide chemically stable interfaces for electrochemical biosensors, biomolecule immobilization, and analytical devices. Their adjustable conductivity, durability, and surface chemistry support sensitive measurements while helping protect underlying materials from chemical or biological degradation.

Factors Affecting Dissolution: Polymorphism, Amorphism and Pseudopolymorphism

2024

Polymorphism refers to the existence of a drug substance in multiple crystalline forms, known as polymorphs. Recently, this term has been expanded to include solvates (forms containing a solvent), amorphous forms (non-crystalline forms), and desolvated solvates (forms from which the solvent has been removed). Some polymorphic crystals possess lower aqueous solubility than their amorphous counterparts, leading to incomplete absorption. For instance, the oral suspension of Chloramphenicol, which...

Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Electroplating is a process that uses electric current to reduce dissolved metal cations so that they form a thin coating on an electrode. Other thin film deposition techniques include chemical vapor deposition (CVD), spin coating, dip coating, and sputter deposition among others. CVD uses a gas-phase precursor of the element to be...

The Carbon Cycle

2019

Carbon is the basis of all organic matter on Earth, and is recycled through the ecosystem in two primary processes: one in which carbon is exchanged among living organisms, and one in which carbon is cycled over long periods of time through fossilized organic remains, weathering of rocks, and volcanic activity. Human activities, including increased agricultural practices and the burning of fossil fuels, has greatly affected the balance of the natural carbon cycle. Biological Carbon Cycle All...

Fabrication of Large-area Free-standing Ultrathin Polymer Films

We describe a method for the fabrication of large-area (up to 13 cm diameter) and ultrathin (as thin as 8 nm) polymer films. Instead of using a sacrificial interlayer to delaminate the film from its substrate, we use a self-limiting surface treatment suitable for arbitrarily large areas.
