Haematococcus Pluvialis

Haematococcus pluvialis is a freshwater green microalga valued for its ability to produce astaxanthin, a red ketocarotenoid with antioxidant activity. Under favorable conditions, it grows as motile green cells, but stresses such as high light intensity, nutrient deprivation, or salinity trigger encystment and the accumulation of astaxanthin in lipid droplets, changing the cells from green to red. This biochemical response protects cellular components from photooxidative damage and makes H. pluvialis an important natural source of astaxanthin. Its cultivation supports research and commercial applications in nutraceuticals, aquaculture feeds, cosmetics, and studies of carotenoid biosynthesis and stress physiology.
