Microscopic Mre

Microscopic magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) is an imaging technique that maps the mechanical properties of small-scale biological structures, helping researchers study tissue stiffness and viscoelasticity beyond conventional imaging resolution. It works by applying controlled mechanical vibrations and using motion-sensitive magnetic resonance sequences to measure how shear waves travel through tissue; computational analysis then converts wave behavior into spatial maps of mechanical properties. In bioengineering, microscopic MRE supports characterization of engineered tissues, biomaterials, and cellular-scale structures without relying solely on destructive mechanical testing. These measurements can clarify how structure and mechanics influence tissue function, disease progression, and regenerative design.

Keeping the microscope optics clean is important for high-quality imaging. Dust, fingerprints, excess immersion oil, or mounting medium on or in a microscope causes reduction in contrast and resolution. DIC is especially sensitive to contamination and scratches on the lens surfaces. This protocol details the procedure for keeping the microscope clean.

Major Components of the Light Microscope

The light microscope is a basic tool for the cell biologist, who should have a thorough understanding of how it works, how it should be aligned for different applications, and how it should be maintained as required to obtain maximum image-forming capacity and resolution. The components of the microscope are described in detail here.

Microscopic Anatomy of Skeletal Muscles

Skeletal muscle cells, also called muscle fibers, are distinctly elongated, multi-nucleated, slender biological units. They are packed with specialized structures designed to facilitate their primary function, which is contraction. The muscle sarcolemma is a plasma membrane enclosing each muscle cell that conducts electrical signals called action potentials. The sarcolemma extends into the cell to form T-tubules, ensuring the neural impulses are uniformly distributed across the entire muscle...

Microscopic Analysis of Bacterial Growth Under Stress Using Microfluidic Chambers

Source: Cayron, J., et al. Multi-scale Analysis of Bacterial Growth Under Stress Treatments. J. Vis. Exp. (2019).This video demonstrates how to prepare and use a microfluidic plate for imaging bacterial cells under stress conditions. It outlines the process of introducing a bacterial culture and a stress-inducing antibiotic medium, followed by cell loading and microscopic setup. Time-lapse imaging in phase-contrast mode is then used to observe the development of elongated, filamentous cells...
