Cheek Cells

Cheek cells are squamous epithelial cells that form the easily sampled inner lining of the mouth, making them a useful model for observing basic animal-cell structure. A gentle cheek swab transfers these cells to a microscope slide, where staining, often with methylene blue, increases contrast by highlighting the nucleus against the cytoplasm and cell membrane. Microscopic examination allows students to identify cellular components and distinguish eukaryotic cells from simpler cell types, while researchers can use cheek-cell samples for noninvasive DNA collection and genetic analysis. Their accessibility makes cheek cells valuable in biology education and introductory studies of human variation.

Typically, the mouse neck injection model is used for evaluate pruritogen-induced scratch behaviors. However, the model provides information only on itch, not pain. Here, a cheek injection model is introduced in mice which can be used to simultaneously measure pain and itch-related behaviors.

Visualizing Onion and Human Cells ExpandIn this experiment you will prepare different types of cells from a plant and animal, onion and human respectively, and then visualize them under a microscope. HYPOTHESES: The experimental hypothesis is that the cells will appear different in overall shape and membrane structure, but there will be some shared similar structures, like nuclei, in both cells. The null hypothesis of the experiment is that there will be no difference in structure between the...

Background Cells represent the most basic biological units of all organisms, whether it be simple, single-celled organisms like bacteria, or large, multicellular organisms like elephants and giant redwood trees. In the mid 19th century, the Cell Theory was proposed to define a cell, which states: Every living organism is made up of one or more cells. The cells are the functional units of all organisms. All cells arise from preexisting cells. All cells share common features such as having a...

This protocol describes the in vivo reprogramming of mouse cancer cells into type 1 dendritic-like cells within the tumor microenvironment through enforced expression of the transcription factors PU.1, IRF8, and BATF3.

Intramucosal Inoculation of Cancer Cells in Murine Model: A Procedure to Establish an Orthotopic Head and Neck Cancer Mouse Model

In this video, we develop an orthotopic head and neck cancer murine model by intramucosal inoculation of the squamous cell carcinoma cell line. The tumor-bearing mouse would show resemblance to clinically relevant symptoms of human disease and can thus be used to study cancer progression and discover novel therapeutic strategies.
