Kinetic Assay

A kinetic assay is a laboratory method that measures how quickly a biological reaction occurs over time, providing information about reaction rates and molecular activity. In a typical assay, researchers monitor changes in substrate concentration, product formation, fluorescence, absorbance, or another measurable signal at defined intervals while controlling factors such as temperature, pH, and reagent concentration. Analysis of the resulting time-course data can reveal enzyme activity, reaction kinetics, catalytic efficiency, and the effects of inhibitors or activators. Kinetic assays support studies of metabolism, signaling, drug action, and molecular interactions, helping researchers compare biological functions and characterize regulatory mechanisms.

Enzyme Assays and Kinetics

2023

Enzyme kinetics describes the catalytic effects of enzymes, which are biomolecules that facilitate chemical reactions necessary for living organisms. Enzymes act on molecules, referred to as substrates, to form products. Enzyme kinetic parameters are determined via assays that directly or indirectly measure changes in substrate or product concentration over time. This video will cover the basic principles of enzyme kinetics (including rate equations) and kinetic models. The concepts governing...

Kinetic Energy

2019

Kinetic energy is the ability of an object in motion to do work or enact change. It can take on many forms. For instance, water flowing down a waterfall has kinetic energy. In biological systems, particles of light travel and are absorbed by plants to create chemical energy. Animals consume the chemical energy and give off molecules that carry their scent through the air. They also generate kinetic energy when they run away from predators. Entire systems also possess kinetic energy, like the...

Enzymes speed up reactions by lowering the activation energy of the reactants. The speed at which the enzyme turns reactants into products is called the rate of reaction. Several factors impact the rate of reaction, including the number of available reactants. Enzyme kinetics is the study of how an enzyme changes the rate of a reaction. Scientists typically study enzyme kinetics with a fixed amount of enzyme in the controlled environment of a test tube. When more reactant, or substrate, is...

Kinetic Molecular Theory: Molecular Velocities, Temperature, and Kinetic Energy

The kinetic molecular theory qualitatively explains the behaviors described by the various gas laws. The postulates of this theory may be applied in a more quantitative fashion to derive these individual laws. Collectively, the molecules in a sample of gas have average kinetic energy and average speed; but individually, they move at different speeds. Molecules frequently undergo elastic collisions in which the momentum is conserved. Since the colliding molecules are deflected off at different...
