Outbreak Investigation

Outbreak investigation is a systematic process used to determine the source, extent, and transmission pattern of an unusual increase in disease cases. Investigators verify diagnoses, establish a case definition, identify and interview affected individuals, construct an epidemic curve, and compare exposures between ill and unaffected groups to test hypotheses about transmission. In biology, this approach connects clinical observations with pathogen biology, host susceptibility, environmental conditions, and population movement. Its findings guide immediate control measures, such as isolation, vaccination, sanitation, or removal of a contaminated source, while improving surveillance and preparedness for future outbreaks.
