Absolute Temperature

Absolute temperature is the thermodynamic temperature of a system measured from absolute zero, the theoretical lower limit of thermal energy, and is expressed in kelvins (K). On the Kelvin scale, temperature differences equal those on the Celsius scale, while a temperature of 0 K represents the limiting state in which particles have minimal possible thermal motion; for an ideal gas, average translational kinetic energy increases directly with temperature. In chemistry, absolute temperature is essential for applying gas laws, calculating thermodynamic quantities, predicting equilibrium behavior, and interpreting temperature-dependent reaction rates through relationships such as the Arrhenius equation.

Mean Absolute Deviation

The mean absolute deviation is also a measure of the variability of data in a sample. It is the absolute value of the average difference between the data values and the mean. Let us consider a dataset containing the number of unsold cupcakes in five shops: 10, 15, 8, 7, and 10. Initially, calculate the sample mean. Then calculate the deviation, or the difference, between each data value and the mean. Next, the absolute values of these deviations are added and divided by the sample size to...

Absolute Value Inequalities

The absolute value is a mathematical tool that represents the distance of a number from zero on the number line, regardless of its sign. In the context of inequalities, absolute value expressions help define a range of permissible values or boundaries for a variable. These inequalities are commonly used in scientific modeling and data interpretation, where variability within or beyond a certain threshold must be captured precisely. An absolute value inequality of the form ∣x∣ ≤ a, where a ≥ 0,...

Chemical Kinetics The reaction rate is the speed at which a chemical reaction occurs. The reaction rate is defined as the change in concentration of a component in the reaction with time. The speed of a reaction depends on several factors, including the concentration of reactants and the temperature at which the reaction is performed. Each reactant contributes to the speed of the reaction by a specific factor. This relationship is defined by the reaction rate law. Rate Law The rate law is an...
