Malondialdehyde

Malondialdehyde (MDA) is a reactive three-carbon dialdehyde formed during oxidative degradation of polyunsaturated fatty acids, making it an important chemical indicator of lipid peroxidation. Its two aldehyde groups readily react with nucleophilic sites in biomolecules, including amino groups and DNA bases, producing adducts that can alter molecular structure and function. In chemistry and biological analysis, researchers quantify MDA in samples such as blood, tissue, or cell extracts using derivatization-based assays that measure colored or fluorescent reaction products. These measurements help assess oxidative damage, compare antioxidant conditions, and investigate processes associated with stress, disease, and food deterioration.
