Melt Transition Temperature

Melt transition temperature is the temperature at which a material changes from a solid or ordered phase to a liquid or disordered phase under a specified pressure, making it an important property for chemical identification and materials design. As heating supplies energy, molecules vibrate more strongly until thermal motion overcomes the intermolecular forces or crystal lattice that maintain the solid structure; during the transition, added heat primarily supports the phase change rather than raising temperature. Chemists measure this behavior using controlled heating and techniques such as differential scanning calorimetry. The resulting transition temperature helps assess purity, distinguish substances, characterize polymers and crystalline materials, and select processing conditions for manufacturing.

Phase Transitions: Melting and Freezing

Heating a crystalline solid increases the average energy of its atoms, molecules, or ions, and the solid gets hotter. At some point, the added energy becomes large enough to partially overcome the forces holding the molecules or ions of the solid in their fixed positions, and the solid begins the process of transitioning to the liquid state or melting. At this point, the temperature of the solid stops rising, despite the continual input of heat, and it remains constant until all of the solid is...

Melting Points in Organic Chemistry The melting point of a compound is the temperature at which the solid phase transitions into the liquid phase at a standard pressure of 1 atmosphere. The melting point of a compound is a physical property, like solubility, density, color, and electronegativity that can be used to identify a compound. Determining the exact temperature at which a compound begins to melt is a challenging task; because of this, the melting point of compounds is reported as a...
