Sustainable Synthesis

Sustainable synthesis is the design of chemical processes that produce useful substances while reducing environmental impact, resource use, and hazards. In chemistry, it applies principles such as atom economy, catalysis, safer solvents, renewable feedstocks, and energy-efficient reaction conditions to minimize waste and avoid persistent or toxic materials across a compound’s life cycle. These strategies support the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, polymers, agrochemicals, and advanced materials with lower emissions and reduced reliance on finite resources. Sustainable synthesis also guides process optimization and lifecycle assessment, helping researchers balance reaction performance, economic feasibility, worker safety, and long-term environmental responsibility.

As the human population continues to grow and use resources, we must be mindful of our planet’s natural limits. Sustainable development provides a pathway to maintain and improve human life now while also ensuring that future generations will have the resources that they need. The long-term success of sustainability efforts rests on understanding the interplay between human actions and ecological systems. The oceans are one important focus of global conservation efforts. Overfishing,...

Sustained attention, or continuously monitoring situations for intermittent and unpredictable events, is a critical aspect of cognition. Here we detail how to test sustained attention in rats using touchscreen operant chambers. We demonstrate comparable performance in male and female rats, making this task useful for studying attention in both sexes.

Source: Amber N. Barron, Ashlea Patterson, and Taylor D. Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Hydrogels are a versatile class of cross-linked polymers produced through relatively simple procedures and with generally inexpensive materials. They can be formed from solution and involve a polymer backbone formed from monomer reagents, an initiator which makes the polymer reactive and a crosslinking species which binds the polymer chains...
