Unsymmetrical Amines

Unsymmetrical amines are nitrogen-containing compounds in which the groups attached to the nitrogen atom are not identical, giving these molecules distinct structures and chemical properties. They commonly form through reactions such as nucleophilic substitution, where an amine attacks an alkyl halide, or reductive amination, where an amine reacts with a carbonyl compound before reduction; controlling stoichiometry and reactivity helps limit mixtures of products. In chemistry, unsymmetrical amines serve as important intermediates in pharmaceutical synthesis, agrochemical production, polymer preparation, and materials research. Their varied substituents influence basicity, solubility, steric effects, and interactions with other molecules.

Unsymmetric Bending

2024

Unsymmetrical bending occurs when the bending moment applied to a structural member does not align with its principal axis. This misalignment leads to complex stress distributions and deflection patterns that differ from those in symmetrical bending, and are essential for designing structures to withstand different loading conditions. In unsymmetrical bending, the neutral axis—where stress is zero—does not necessarily align with the geometric axes of the cross-section. The orientation of the...

A novel account for the synthesis of unsymmetrical 1,2-diols based on a retropinacol/cross-pinacol coupling mechanism is described. Due to the catalytic execution of this reaction a considerable improvement compared to conventional cross-pinacol couplings is achieved.

Unsymmetric Loading of Thin-Walled Members

2024

Thin-walled members with non-symmetrical cross-sections are vital to engineering structures, offering material efficiency and structural integrity. However, unsymmetrical loading on these members leads to complex stress distributions, resulting in simultaneous bending and twisting can cause deformation or structural failure. The interaction between bending and twisting requires detailed analysis to ensure structural resilience. The concept of the shear center is crucial in countering the...

Beams with Unsymmetric Loadings

Analyzing a supported beam under unsymmetrical loadings is essential in structural engineering to understand how beams respond to varied force distributions. This analysis involves calculating the deflection and identifying points where the slope of the beam is zero, which are crucial for ensuring structural stability and functionality. The first moment-area theorem determines the slope at any point on the beam. This theorem indicates that the change in slope between two points on a beam...

Amines to Amides: Acylation of Amines

2025

Various carboxylic acid derivatives (such as acid chlorides, esters, and anhydrides) can be used for the acylation of amines to yield amides. The reaction requires two equivalents of amines. The first amine molecule functions as a nucleophile and attacks the carbonyl carbon to produce a tetrahedral intermediate. This is followed by the loss of the leaving group and restoration of the C=O bond. Next, the second equivalent of amine serves as a Brønsted base and deprotonates the quaternary amide...
