Autoimmune Pancreatitis

Autoimmune pancreatitis is a chronic inflammatory disease in which immune-mediated injury causes pancreatic swelling, fibrosis, and impaired digestive or endocrine function. It commonly involves lymphoplasmacytic inflammation and, in many cases, increased IgG4-positive plasma cells, producing diffuse or focal pancreatic enlargement and narrowing of the pancreatic duct; these changes can lead to obstructive jaundice, abdominal discomfort, or diabetes. Recognizing autoimmune pancreatitis is clinically important because it can resemble pancreatic cancer and may occur with inflammation in other organs as part of IgG4-related disease. Accurate diagnosis guides corticosteroid treatment, monitoring for relapse, and assessment of associated organ involvement.
