Care Acuity Scoring

Care acuity scoring is a clinical method for classifying patients according to the complexity, intensity, and urgency of care they require. It uses structured criteria such as physiological instability, monitoring needs, treatment complexity, and assistance with daily activities to assign an acuity level, helping distinguish routine, intermediate, and highly intensive care needs. Clinicians and healthcare administrators use these scores to support staffing decisions, prioritize resources, guide patient placement, and evaluate workload across units. Consistent scoring can improve communication among care teams and provide a standardized basis for tracking changes in patient condition, although scores should complement professional judgment rather than replace it.

The methodology to acquire the physiological signal for a Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) test is presented. A method is proposed to interpret the CAD score concerning test positivity and negativity, including the granularities of each. The economics of the test are discussed in the context of the current standard of care.

Introduction to z Scores

2023

A z score (or standardized value) is measured in units of the standard deviation. It tells you how many standard deviations the value x is above (to the right of) or below (to the left of) the mean, μ. Values of x that are larger than the mean have positive z scores, and values of x that are smaller than the mean have negative z scores. If x equals the mean, then x has a zero z score. It is important to note that the mean of the z scores is zero, and the standard deviation is one. z scores help...
