Medication Education

Medication education is the structured communication of information patients and caregivers need to use medicines safely, effectively, and as intended. In clinical practice, it explains a medication’s purpose, dosing schedule, administration technique, expected effects, potential adverse reactions, contraindications, and interactions, while using teach-back to confirm understanding. Healthcare professionals apply medication education during prescribing, dispensing, hospitalization, and transitions of care to support informed decisions and consistent adherence. Clear, individualized instruction can reduce preventable medication errors, improve therapeutic outcomes, and help patients recognize when to seek clinical advice.
