Physical Rehabilitation

Physical rehabilitation is a clinical process that helps people restore, maintain, or improve movement, strength, endurance, and independence after injury, illness, surgery, or disability. It begins with assessment of impairments and functional goals, then uses individualized exercise, task-specific practice, education, manual techniques, and assistive devices to promote adaptation and safer performance of daily activities. Applied across musculoskeletal, neurological, and cardiopulmonary care, rehabilitation can reduce limitations, support participation in work and community life, and guide recovery over time through repeated measurement and adjustment of treatment. Its principles also inform prevention, long-term disability management, and research on functional outcomes.

Source: Jaideep S. Talwalkar, MD, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT The examination of the body is fundamental to the practice of medicine. Since the Roman Empire, physicians have described the connection between alterations in function of specific parts of the body and specific disease states and have sought to further scientific understanding to improve bedside diagnosis. However, in this modern age of increasing technology within medical diagnostics, it...

Assessment of Physical Activity Intensity with Accelerometers and Oxygen Consumption

Here, we present a protocol to assess physical activity intensity levels measured with indirect calorimetry and two accelerometers (on the right wrist and waist) during an incremental walking-jogging test (from 0.84 to 2.37 m/s) on an oval track. The results show differences among the physical intensity assessed through those methods.

2016

This article reports the development of a neuro-rehabilitation approach, "constraint-induced sound therapy (CIST)" for sudden sensorineural hearing loss. The aim of CIST is to prevent maladaptive cortical reorganization by using an enriched acoustic environment. CIST represents a safe, easy, inexpensive, and effective approach to treat sudden sensorineural hearing loss.
