Protected Health Information

Protected Health Information (PHI) is individually identifiable health data created, received, maintained, or transmitted by a healthcare provider, health plan, or healthcare clearinghouse, and its protection is central to clinical privacy and trust. PHI can include diagnoses, laboratory results, medical-record numbers, billing details, and demographic information when linked to a patient, while safeguards such as role-based access, secure transmission, authentication, and audit trails limit inappropriate use or disclosure. In clinical research and care, understanding PHI supports HIPAA-compliant data handling, informed data governance, and responsible sharing; de-identification or limited datasets can enable analysis while reducing privacy risks.
