Uremia

Uremia is a clinical syndrome caused by advanced kidney dysfunction, in which impaired filtration and regulation allow nitrogenous waste and other solutes to accumulate in the blood, producing systemic illness. As glomerular filtration declines, the kidneys cannot adequately excrete metabolic byproducts or maintain fluid, electrolyte, acid–base, and endocrine balance; retained toxins and these physiologic disturbances affect multiple organs. Clinicians recognize uremia through symptoms such as fatigue, nausea, itching, cognitive changes, and fluid-related complications, alongside laboratory and clinical assessment. Its evaluation guides urgent treatment, including dialysis or kidney transplantation, and helps monitor disease progression and treatment outcomes.
