Centrifugal Casting

Centrifugal casting is a metal-forming process that uses mold rotation to produce dense, typically cylindrical components with fewer internal defects. Molten metal enters a rotating mold, where centrifugal force presses it against the mold wall as it cools and solidifies from the outside inward; rotation speed, pouring temperature, and mold design influence wall thickness and material distribution. The process is widely used to manufacture pipes, tubes, bushings, sleeves, and rings, especially when uniform structure and reliable mechanical performance are important. Because impurities and less-dense inclusions tend to concentrate near the inner surface, machining can often remove them from the finished part.

Working with Centrifuges

Source: Robert M. Rioux & Suprita Jharimune, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Earth's gravitational force is capable of separating heterogeneous mixtures. However, many systems avert this type of separation owing to the length of time usually required in such cases. Centrifugation is one of the most powerful tools for the separation of heterogeneous mixtures1. It involves the application of centripetal force for sedimentation of the heavier phase, leading to separation of...

Centrifugation

Centrifugation is a separation technique based on differences in density or size. It is commonly used to separate solids from aqueous interferents. During centrifugation, the sample is placed in centrifugation tubes and spun at high angular velocity, which allows centrifugal force to act differentially on the different densities or masses of the components. After spinning, the supernatant liquid is decanted. Depending on the specific application, either the pellet or the supernatant is retained...

An Introduction to the Centrifuge

The centrifuge is an instrument used in nearly every research lab across the globe. Centrifugation is the process by which a centrifuge is used to separate components of a complex mixture. By spinning laboratory samples at very high speeds, the components of a given mixture are subjected to centrifugal force, which causes more dense particles to migrate away from the axis of rotation and lighter ones to move toward it. These particles can sediment at the bottom of the tube into what’s...
