Photochemical Smog

Photochemical smog is a mixture of air pollutants formed when sunlight drives chemical reactions among nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds, making it a major environmental and public health concern. In warm, stagnant conditions, ultraviolet radiation initiates reactions that convert nitrogen dioxide into ozone and generate other reactive oxidants, producing the characteristic haze. Environmental scientists study photochemical smog through air-quality monitoring, atmospheric modeling, and pollutant-source analysis. This work supports strategies that reduce vehicle and industrial emissions, limit ground-level ozone formation, protect ecosystems and respiratory health, and improve urban air-quality management.

Photochemical Initiation Of Radical Polymerization Reactions

2023

Source: David C. Powers, Tamara M. Powers, Texas A&M In this video, we will carry out the photochemically initiated polymerization of styrene to generate polystyrene, which is an important commodity plastic. We will learn the fundamentals of photochemistry and use simple photochemistry to initiate radical polymerization reactions. Specifically, in this module we will examine the photochemistry of benzoyl peroxide and its role as a photo-initiator of styrene polymerization reactions. In the...

The Photochemical Reaction Center

2023

Reaction centers are pigment-protein complexes that initiate energy conversion from photons to chemical entities. Therefore, photochemical reaction center is a more appropriate term that describes these complexes. The Nobel laureates Robert Emerson and William Arnold provided the first experimental evidence of photochemical reaction centers by demonstrating the participation of nearly 2,500 chlorophyll molecules for the release of just one molecule of oxygen. Despite thousands of photosynthetic...

Photochemical Electrocyclic Reactions: Stereochemistry

2023

The absorption of UV–visible light by conjugated systems causes the promotion of an electron from the ground state to the excited state. Consequently, photochemical electrocyclic reactions proceed via the excited-state HOMO rather than the ground-state HOMO. Since the ground- and excited-state HOMOs have different symmetries, the stereochemical outcome of electrocyclic reactions depends on the mode of activation; i.e., thermal or photochemical. The goal of this protocol is to photochemically induce ischemic injury to the posterior optic nerve in rat. This model is critical to studies of the pathophysiology of posterior ischemic optic neuropathy, and therapeutic approaches for this and other optic neuropathies, as well as of other CNS ischemic diseases.
