Variable Speed Motor

A variable speed motor is an electric motor whose rotational speed can be adjusted to match the requirements of a device or process, improving control and efficiency. Electronic controllers regulate the motor’s voltage, current, or supply frequency, while feedback from speed sensors can maintain stable operation under changing loads. In genetics laboratories, variable speed motors drive equipment such as centrifuges, orbital shakers, mixers, and pumps, allowing researchers to control sample handling, cell growth conditions, and reagent distribution. Precise speed control can improve experimental consistency, protect biological samples from excessive shear, and support reproducible workflows in DNA, RNA, and cellular analysis.

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. The DC machine operates with DC currents and voltages as opposed to an AC machine, which requires AC currents and voltages. DC machines were the first to be invented and utilize two magnetic fields that are controlled by DC currents. The same machine can be easily reconfigured to be a motor or generator if appropriate field excitation is available, since the DC machine has two fields termed field...

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California One principle of brain organization is the topographic mapping of information. Especially in sensory and motor cortices, adjacent regions of the brain tend to represent information from adjacent parts of the body, resulting in maps of the body expressed on the surface of the brain. The primary sensory and motor maps in the brain surround a prominent sulcus known as the central sulcus. The cortex...

Visualization of High Speed Liquid Jet Impaction on a Moving Surface

Two experimental devices for examining liquid jet impingement on a high-speed moving surface are described: an air cannon device and a spinning disk device. The apparatuses are used to determine optimal approaches to the application of liquid friction modifier (LFM) onto rail tracks for top-of-rail friction control.

AC Induction Motor Characterization

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. The objectives of this experiment are to find the equivalent circuit parameters of a three-phase induction motor using the per-phase equivalent circuit and tests similar to those used in transformer characterization. In electrical engineering, an equivalent circuit (or theoretical circuit) can be determined for a given system. The equivalent circuit retains all characteristics of the original system,...
