Foreign Income Adjustment

Foreign income adjustment is the correction made to domestic production measures to account for income earned across national borders, helping distinguish an economy’s location of production from the income received by its residents. In national accounting, analysts add factor income residents earn from foreign investments and employment, then subtract income paid to foreign-owned capital and workers; this converts gross domestic product (GDP) into gross national income (GNI). The adjustment supports international comparisons, evaluates residents’ actual economic resources, and clarifies how cross-border investment, labor income, and multinational business activity affect national welfare and macroeconomic performance.
