Fluorescent Beads

Fluorescent beads are microscopic polymer or silica particles that contain fluorescent dyes, allowing them to emit detectable light after excitation and serve as measurable labels in biomedical research. Their fluorescence can be tuned by dye composition, while surface coatings such as antibodies enable selective binding to cells, proteins, or other target molecules; instruments then measure the emitted signal to identify or quantify these targets. In medicine, fluorescent beads support flow cytometry, immunoassays, microscopy, and diagnostic test development, with applications in cell characterization, biomarker detection, assay calibration, and evaluation of analytical performance.

A Multiplex Bead-Based Immunoassay to Quantify Multiple Cytokine Targets

2025

This video demonstrates a multiplex bead-based immunoassay for quantifying multiple cytokine targets in a sample. A mixture of distinct microspheres conjugated to cytokine-specific antibodies is used to bind the cytokines present in the sample. Streptavidin-tagged reporters are immobilized on the bound-cytokines using biotinylated detection antibodies. Flow cytometry identifies the bound cytokines based on the unique sizes and internal fluorescence intensities of the microspheres, while the...
