Ryan Score Threshold

The Ryan Score Threshold refers to reference cutoffs used to interpret oropharyngeal pH monitoring for suspected laryngopharyngeal reflux, a form of reflux that reaches the throat and upper airway. The score combines the number and duration of acid events with the percentage of monitoring time during which pH falls below 5.5, producing separate values for upright and supine periods. Commonly used abnormal thresholds are greater than 9.41 upright and 6.8 supine, although interpretation depends on the monitoring system and clinical context. These measurements help clinicians assess reflux-related throat symptoms and support more consistent diagnosis and treatment decisions.

Ryan and Deci's Self-Determination Theory

2025

Self-Determination Theory (SDT), formulated by Richard Ryan and Edward Deci, explains that human motivation is driven by three fundamental psychological needs: autonomy, competence, and relatedness. When these needs are met, individuals experience personal growth, intrinsic motivation, and overall well-being. Autonomy is the need to feel in control of one's actions and decisions. For example, a student who chooses their research topic is likely to be more engaged and motivated than one who is...

The Staircase Procedure for Finding a Perceptual Threshold

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Psychophysics is the name for a set of methods in perceptual psychology designed in order to relate the actual intensity of stimuli to their perceptual intensity. One important aspect of psychophysics involves the measurement of perceptual thresholds: How bright does a light need to be for a person to be able to detect it? How little pressure applied to the skin is detectable? How soft can a sound be and still be heard? Put...

Rapid Determination of the Thermal Nociceptive Threshold in Diabetic Rats

Here, we describe a rapid reliable and simple procedure to determine the lowest temperature at which rats or mice show nocifensive behavior, i.e. the thermal nociceptive threshold (TNT). This method applies a slowly increasing thermal stimulus allowing precise and reproducible estimation of TNTs with minimum, if any, stress to the animals.

Introduction to z Scores

2023

A z score (or standardized value) is measured in units of the standard deviation. It tells you how many standard deviations the value x is above (to the right of) or below (to the left of) the mean, μ. Values of x that are larger than the mean have positive z scores, and values of x that are smaller than the mean have negative z scores. If x equals the mean, then x has a zero z score. It is important to note that the mean of the z scores is zero, and the standard deviation is one. z scores help...

z scores are the standardized values obtained after converting a normal distribution into a standard normal distribution. A z score is measured in units of the standard deviation.
