Emotional Influences

Emotional influences are the ways feelings and affective states shape perception, judgment, preferences, and behavior. In microeconomics, they help explain why consumers and other decision-makers may depart from the fully rational model: emotions alter perceived utility, risk evaluation, time preferences, and responses to gains and losses, often through heuristics such as loss aversion. These influences affect purchasing, saving, negotiation, work effort, and responses to prices or incentives. Studying them connects individual psychology with behavioral economics, improving predictions of choice and informing policies, marketing strategies, and market designs that account for actual human decision-making.
